The Disposition of the Expiation for Zihar

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 4538 )
Q: I have uttered the words of zihar, and I asked about it, and some of the noble scholars said: It is obligatory for you to fast for two months, knowing that I am a working person and I am unable to fast. Is it permissible to feed people instead of fasting, and is it permissible to send money instead of food to Afghanistan , where they are Muslims and in need of such things? Please inform us, may Allah reward you with the best reward.

A: If the situation is as you described, that you are obligated to pay the expiation for zihar, and that you are unable to free a believing slave or fast for two consecutive months, then it is sufficient for you to feed sixty poor people, giving each poor person half a sa' of rice, wheat, or the like. It is not permissible to pay the value in lieu of feeding, because feeding is mentioned in the texts, whereas paying its value is not. You are not permitted to have sexual intercourse with your wife until you have paid the aforementioned expiation. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
