Q: I present my case to you and hope that Allah, Mighty and Majestic, will grant Your Excellency the ability to appreciate the extent of the regret and torment that accompanies me because of this act. My case is that I am a woman who is 48 years old. Twenty-five years ago, when I was 19, I was married, and with the praise of Allah, I had a daughter and twin boys. I was breastfeeding them when I felt a change in my body. I went to a doctor, and he said there was no pregnancy. I went to another doctor, and he said the same. Then I went to a third doctor, who was a Christian, and he told me there was a pregnancy. I was afraid for myself from the hardship and insisted on aborting myself, although I had not felt the fetus move. The Christian doctor gave me an injection to expel this fetus. At that time, I was living in Egypt. When I took the injection, I went home, and the fetus fell there. This fetus was formed in all its parts, resembling a human image, and it was male. Its size was about the size of a palm, or less, but, as Allah knows, it had no bones, because one of the Egyptian neighbors
took it to perform ghusl with it, believing that it would lead to pregnancy. Then she took it and put it in salt, and its size became about the size of a fingertip. With the praise of Allah, Allah bestowed upon me, and I came to this country, where I learned the religion in the most complete way. I realized that I had done what angers Allah, but I did not know that this was forbidden, because I was young in age and knew nothing of the religion in those days. This act had become widespread among many women. I ask Your Excellency to clarify to me the ruling on this, and what is the expiation for it so that I may earn the pleasure of Allah? I feel intense regret. I ask Allah to guide us to sincere repentance. May Allah reward you with good, and I ask Allah to record this in the scale of your deeds.
A: You must repent to Allah for what you did, because aborting the fetus is not permissible, and you have committed a forbidden act. You must repent to Allah. If this fetus had not reached four months, then you owe no expiation; rather, you must repent and not return to such an act. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
