Q: I am sending you this question, hoping that Allah, the Mighty and Capable, will guide me and you to what is good. I am an Arab Muslim woman who married an American after he embraced Islam. We now have three daughters and a son, and all of them are holding fast to Islam, praise be to Allah. My problem is that my eldest daughter, after enlisting in the military academy, met a man some time ago and married him without our knowledge. She has given birth to a daughter who is
now 4 months old. The problem is that this man is not a Muslim. My daughter left the military and came to live in the same city where we live. When she arrived with this sudden news, I was extremely angry, to the point that I decided not to speak to her and to leave her alone; because she did not consult me about her marriage to this man. However, my heart, as a Muslim mother, could not bear it, so I tried to talk to her, telling her that her husband must embrace Islam. But she said that she had tried with him herself, but he is torn between his family on one hand and what he knows or hears about Muslims on the other, which did not encourage him to embrace Islam, and that is due to harmful rumors against Islam on the other hand. My daughter seems happy with him as a husband and as the father of her daughter, but the fact that he is on a religion other than Islam makes me sad for her. I ask Allah, and then I ask you, what should be done now? Should I drive this man out of my daughter's life and bear the consequences, especially since he will take my granddaughter and raise her on a religion other than Islam? Or should I try with him and treat him with kindness, so that perhaps Allah will guide his heart to Islam? And what is the duration for which I should try with him? Because this solution may take a long time. Please inform us, may Allah reward you with good.
A: It is not permissible for a Muslim woman to marry a disbeliever. Allah the Exalted said:
[Al-Baqarah 2:221] And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
