The Limits of the Relationship with the Wife’s Sister
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 11082 )
Q: Whatare the limits of the relationship with my sister's husband?I ask you to clarify the Shari'ah perspective on dealing with him, knowing that we have a very strong relationship with him; he is like an older brother to us, a nurturing advisor, and we consider him trustworthy with us and concerned about what is good for us. I also ask your Eminence to clarify whether I may sit with him in the presence of the family, such as my mother, my brothers, and my husband, and what are the limits of hijab from him? Is there permissibility, necessity, or precaution in this matter, or what? Please inform us, may Allah reward you with good.
A: The sister’s husband is not a mahram (a relative one may not marry) to the woman; he is considered a non-mahram (stranger) to her. It is not permissible for her to uncover her face for him, shake his hand, be alone with him, or travel with him; his status is the same as that of other non-mahram men. However, if she sits with him in the presence of one of her mahrams, and while maintaining her hijab, covering, and modesty, there is no harm.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
