The midwife does not become a mahram
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 18822 )
Q: Some women act as midwives for other women, attending to the newborn and cutting its umbilical cord. Does this action make her, and her children, mahrams of that newborn?
A: A woman acting as a midwife for another woman during childbirth, attending to the newborn, and cutting its umbilical cord does not thereby become a mahram of that newborn, nor of its children, nor of the children of that woman, simply by virtue of that act. This is because mahram status is established only through lineage, marriage, or breastfeeding. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
