A woman’s refusal to share the bed except for a sum of money

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 14684 )
Q: I have a wife who, when I ask her to sleep with me, says: “I will not sleep with you unless you give me a sum of money.” I have two children from her, and I am not an employee who can give her a sum of money; I work with my hands in the gravel only. Praise be to Allah, I am able to provide the household expenses for the day, but her request is difficult. I do not want much wealth; I only want the pleasure of Allah and the Paradise He has prepared for the righteous. We ask Allah not to deprive us. I told her: “This is forbidden for you to do.” She said to me: “No, it is lawful—may the forbidden be disgraced.”
She mocks me. Please advise us about this; she says it is lawful. May Allah reward you with good and preserve you for the Muslims.

A: It is obligatory for each of the spouses to treat the other with kindness, as Allah the Exalted said:
And live with them in kindnessوَعَاشِرُوهُنَّ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ
And He said:
And due to the wives is similar to what is expected of them, according to what is reasonable. But the men have a degree over them [in responsibility and authority].وَلَهُنَّ مِثْلُ الَّذِي عَلَيْهِنَّ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَلِلرِّجَالِ عَلَيْهِنَّ دَرَجَةٌ
[Al-Baqarah 2:228]
Therefore, it is obligatory for the wife to obey her husband in what is good, especially when he calls her to the bed. And it is obligatory for the husband to treat her well, not to be harsh with her, and to provide her with the lawful maintenance of housing, food, and clothing, similar to what he provides for his other wives. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
