Q: Indeed,it has become customary among the Muslims inIndiathat the wife's family gives a large sum of money to the husband's family at the time of marriage, and this causes many problems, among them: that the young man is unable to choose
a suitable wife due to the huge amounts paid by others, that poor Muslims find themselves forced to borrow money if they have a daughter of marriageable age, and this hinders the progress of Muslims in this state. There are many Islamic associations in the state of Kerala , but none of them takes an interest in this matter. I hope you will clarify this issue in light of Islamic creed, and if it is contrary to the Shari'ah, I hope you will make it clear that this custom is contrary to the Islamic Shari'ah.
A: It is obligatory for the man to give the woman a mahr (bridal gift) at the time of contracting the marriage, either paid by him or deferred in his liability, whether small or large; for Allah the Exalted said:[An-Nisa 4:24] the hadith. If the wife’s family gives the husband some money before or after the contract to encourage him to marry their daughter and to seek a good and honorable life with her, there is nothing wrong with that; because in this sense it falls under the category of ihsan (excellence in worship), maintaining family ties, and cooperating on the chastity of private parts by establishing the Islamic institution. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.

So for whatever you enjoy [of marriage] from them, give them their due compensation as an obligation. And there is no blame upon you for what you mutually agree to beyond the obligation. Indeed, Allah is ever Knowing and Wise.
And for his saying (peace and blessings be upon him) to the man who asked him to marry him to the woman who offered herself to him, when he said to him: “O Messenger of Allah, if you have no need of her, then marry me to her.” He said: “Do you have anything?” He said: “No, by Allah, O Messenger of Allah.” He said: “Go to your family and see if you find anything.” So he went and then returned and said: “O Messenger of Allah, I found nothing.” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Look, even if it is just an iron ring.”
