Preventing pregnancy out of concern for the infant
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 6488 )
Q: I inform you that I got married, and my wife became pregnant, and Allah blessed us with a son. After the birth, she underwent a procedure at one of the hospitals, which was the insertion of an IUD, i.e., a device, in order to stop pregnancy,
due to the fact that the child refused to use the bottle and continued to nurse from his mother’s breast. The intention was for the child’s growth to be completed and out of concern for him, since he was not nursing from the bottle. Once the child grew, the IUD would be removed, with my consent and hers. After that, his mother passed away to the mercy of Allah while I was at work, and I received news of her death as a result of a heart attack. She was buried, may Allah have mercy on her, and the IUD was still inside her, and I did not remember it during her death, due to the tragedy. I remembered this IUD after a month had passed since her death. I am a man who fears Allah; therefore, I hope you will issue a ruling to me in this situation: does she have a sin for that, or do I personally, since I am ready to do what pleases Allah regarding her, as she was a righteous and religious woman. May Allah guide you.
A: If the matter is as mentioned, then she owes nothing for temporarily inserting the IUD out of concern for the child from breastfeeding while she was pregnant, and no sin is incurred by her or by you for it remaining in her after her death. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
