The first question of Fatwa No. ( 18579 )

Q1: What is the ruling on performing a tubal ligation procedure to prevent pregnancy permanently in the following circumstances: 1 - If the woman has a large number of children, for example 12 or more, and is physically exhausted, and cannot use temporary contraceptives for health reasons? 2 - If she can only give birth via a C-section, and has undergone several such operations, five or more? 3 - If she suffers from a serious heart condition, and pregnancy causes her great strain, and she has several children. 4 - If she has chronic illnesses, but they are not serious, such as: kidney disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, etc. Knowing that these illnesses may become more dangerous during pregnancy. 5 - What is the ruling on using the IUD to prevent pregnancy? The IUD is a small device placed in the uterus to prevent the fertilized egg from attaching to the uterine wall, and then having it pass out with the menstrual blood, knowing that this egg is only a few days old before the time for the new cycle arrives.
A1: It is not permissible to prevent pregnancy unless it results in danger to the life of
the mother; because pregnancy is required by the Shari'ah, and preventing it deprives the individual and society of much good. But if there is a dire necessity determined by a group of skilled and trustworthy doctors; then it is permissible to prevent it for that reason. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
