Q: Some scholars say that contracting a marriage on Sunday is not fitting for Muslims, but rather it is an act of the Christians, and they have prohibited the wedding feast on that day and attributed some of them to the disbelievers. Those who say this are scholars, some of whom are graduates of the Islamic University in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and the reason for signing the marriage contract on Sunday here is that there is no opportunity for government employees to witness the marriage contract except on Sunday, and this has caused great fitnah (trial, discord or temptation) among the Muslims. The objectors argue by saying: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) contracted a marriage on Friday. So I ask you, may you please inform us whether the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) made this a binding, prescribed ruling in marriage, or is it up to each person to choose a day for his marriage contract?
A: There is no harm in contracting a marriage on any day of the week, and it is not specific to Friday; because we do not know of any evidence from the Book or
the Sunnah that indicates this, and there is nothing in contracting a marriage on Saturday or Sunday that necessitates imitating the disbelievers; because that is not considered establishing festivals on the two days mentioned. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
