Q: I have some questions and I am very confused about the answers to them. I asked some students of knowledge and found different answers, and some of them were hesitant, and I did not find evidence for some of the answers: A - Is it permissible for me to marry my maternal uncle (my mother’s brother) to one of my daughters? If the answer is that it is not permissible, as I have heard, is he a mahram (relative one may not marry) to my daughters, and is it permissible for them to meet him? 2 - Is my grandfather (my mother’s father) a mahram (relative one may not marry) to my wife, and is it permissible for her to meet him? Please give us a ruling with evidence, and may Allah reward you with good.
A: First: It is not permissible for your maternal uncle to marry one of your daughters; because your maternal uncle becomes a maternal uncle to your daughters, and it is permissible for them to uncover their faces in front of him and to shake his hand. Second: It is permissible for your wife to uncover her face in front of your grandfather, your mother’s father; because he is among her mahram (relatives one may not marry); because he is the father of her husband’s mother. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
