The conditions that must be met by the mahram during travel

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The third question of fatwa number ( 18173 )
Q3: I have a nephew who is five years old and a niece who is four years old. Are they considered mahrams for me? And is it true that the mahram must actually be a mahram when he reaches the age of discernment, where he can distinguish between objects, colors, sweets, and other things, or does he have to reach puberty?
A3: The mahram who accompanies a woman must be an adult of sound mind; because a child or a person of unsound mind does not achieve the purpose of mahram status, which is protecting the woman and attending to her affairs. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
