A Woman’s Work in Her Husband’s Home
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The fourth question of Fatwa No. ( 9404 )
Q4: What is the ruling on a woman working in her husband’s home in household cleaning and laundry, and if she falls short, does she sin? Is preparing food and what follows it among the husband’s rights? And does the husband have the right to prevent his wife from buying with her own money what she wishes, if she has enough for even adornment and luxuries? Knowing that her clothing and food are provided for her,
and her shelter, but she does not want the clothing he chooses; rather, she wants the expensive type for herself and her child, and luxuries and adornment, and she buys all of this with her money, and the husband is not pleased with her buying even luxuries with her money, knowing that he does not buy for her most of the requests for adornment and other household necessities. So, is it because the provision for the home is among the husband’s rights over the wife, and he has the right to prevent her from buying any need for the home with her money? Please inform me of any useful publication or book related to marital life, and her rights, especially the upbringing of children, whether from the research departments or outside them, and how to obtain them and their prices. Please inform me in detail, for I am a layman who needs to know every small and large matter about marriage and upbringing due to the necessity of these matters.
A4: First: The obligatory work of a woman in her husband’s home, such as cooking, washing, clothes, utensils, cleaning the house, bedding, and the like, varies according to the social classes of people and their prevailing customs and habits. Second: The husband does not have the right to prevent his wife from buying luxuries in clothing and food with her own money, except if she is extravagant or buys something forbidden, in which case he prevents her from extravagance and committing what Allah has forbidden, and he takes her by the hand to make her stop that.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
