The Good Treatment of Spouses Is Obligatory on Both Parties

Fatwa No. ( 12396 )
Q: My father is about 65 years old, and my mother is the same. The father mistreats the mother with his tongue, and the mother goes out with her children without his permission. Since her children are married, she has been with them for about five years. She asks the father for a divorce, but he refuses, and he has not provided for her. My question is: What is obligatory on both parties? Since each of them is financially well-off, what do you advise both of them to do? I am their eldest son, and I always advise them to be tolerant. May Allah guide you to what is best for the Muslims.
A: It is obligatory for each of the spouses to treat the other with kindness and to be good to one another. It is not permissible for the husband to mistreat his wife with his tongue, and it is not permissible for the wife to leave his house without his permission. Therefore, both parties should fear Allah (Mighty and Majestic) and adhere to His limits. May Allah improve the conditions of everyone. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
