Fatwa number ( 18123 )
Q: Your Honored Father: A woman from Lebanon contacted me, stating that she was Christian, and that Allah opened her heart to Islam. She is from a religious family that is fanatical about their false religion. The woman says: If my husband learns of my Islam, he will kill me in the worst way. This woman has begun to remove what displays her Christianity, such as wearing the cross, wearing short clothing, and abandoning intoxicants. However, there remain matters for which she fears for her life due to the risk of being killed, specifically the issue of her husband and his treatment of her. The woman says: If they kick me out of the house, I will die; because there is no one I can turn to after Allah, as my entire family and the people of my village hate Islam intensely. She is married and has married daughters, and her daughters have cut off contact with her and refused to enter her house because
she removed the cross from her neck. So what if they learn of her Islam? The woman says that regarding prayer, the situation is extremely difficult, but she will try to combine two prayers secretly in the absence of her family and husband. As for Ramadan, how should she fast? Your Honored Father: The woman is living in great distress and immense anxiety. She faces two choices: either remain among them and return to Christianity, or adhere to the teachings of Islam secretly. But the problem of the husband and his treatment remains; this is the major obstacle. And as I mentioned to your honor, she fears being killed. Please issue a ruling on this, and may Allah reward you. The message is very urgent. May Allah preserve you, guide your steps, and make you beneficial to the Muslims.

A: It is not permissible for a Muslim woman to remain under the protection of a non-Muslim husband, nor is it lawful for her to have marital relations with him; because of the saying of Allah the Exalted:
they are not lawful [wives] for them, nor are they lawful [husbands] for themلاَ هُنَّ حِلٌّ لَهُمْ وَلاَ هُمْ يَحِلُّونَ لَهُنَّ
[Al-Mumtahanah 60:10]
The woman mentioned must turn to Allah to remove her harm; perhaps Allah will relieve her of the distress she is in. He is the Hearing, the Near. Also, she must do what she can of the means to get rid of her husband and her family by turning to one of the Islamic centers, or to the mufti of Lebanon
so that one of them can do what is necessary to free her from her husband and her family, and to distance her from them and separate her from her husband. May Allah make her affairs easy and relieve her distress. She must maintain the prayer, even if by combining the Dhuhr and Asr prayers in the time of one of them, and the Maghrib and Isha' prayers in the time of one of them, and she must fast Ramadan secretly until Allah relieves her distress. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
