Q: What is the ruling in Islam regarding shaking hands with a non-mahram woman, and are a paternal aunt’s daughter, a maternal aunt’s daughter, a brother’s son’s daughter, my brother’s wife, my paternal uncle’s wife, my maternal uncle’s wife, as well as my wife’s sister and her daughter, and also my paternal aunt who is my father’s paternal cousin’s daughter, and my mother’s sister who is her paternal cousin’s daughter, and also my paternal cousin’s son’s daughter—are the women I mentioned to your permissibility in this question considered non-mahram to me, is it permissible to shake their hands, and what is the ruling on looking at them without lust?
A: Your paternal cousin’s daughter, your maternal cousin’s daughter, your paternal cousin’s son’s daughter, your brother’s wife, your paternal uncle’s wife, your maternal uncle’s wife, your wife’s sister, and your wife’s sister’s daughter—all these women you mentioned in your question are non-mahram to you. It is not permissible for you to look at them with lust or without lust. Likewise, your paternal aunt who is your father’s paternal cousin’s daughter, and your mother’s sister who is her paternal cousin’s daughter, you may not shake their hands, nor look at them, because they are non-mahram to you, and you are not a mahram to them. As for your paternal aunt who is your father’s sister, or your grandfather’s sister, however high up the lineage, they are mahram to you. Likewise, your mother’s sister, and your grandmother’s sister, however high up the lineage, are mahram to you.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
