Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : What is the meaning of the saying of Allah the Exalted:
(1) When the earth is shaken with its [final] earthquake (2) And the earth discharges its burdens (3) And man says, "What is [wrong] with it?"
[Az-Zalzalah 99:1-3]
?

The Shaykh : Its meaning is that Allah the Exalted reminds His servants of the Day of Resurrection, in which the earth will be shaken with its quake, as Allah the Exalted said:
(1) O mankind, fear your Lord. Indeed, the convulsion of the [final] Hour is a terrible thing. (2) On the Day you see it every nursing mother will be distracted from that [child] she was nursing, and every pregnant woman will abort her pregnancy, and you will see the people [appearing] intoxicated while they are not intoxicated; but the punishment of Allah is severe.
[Al-Hajj 22:1-2]
As for the earth discharging its weights, Allah the Exalted will resurrect those in the graves, and the people will come out of their graves onto the surface of the earth after having been in its belly.
And man says, "What is [wrong] with it?"
[Az-Zalzalah 99:3]
This means "what has happened?" and that is due to the intensity of the terror and terrors. On that day, Allah the Exalted says:
(4) That Day, it will report its news (5) Because your Lord has commanded it.
[Az-Zalzalah 99:4-5]
So it will testify to what was done upon it, whether good or evil. Thus, this verse depicts a scene from the scenes of the Day of Resurrection; indeed, these verses depict a scene from the scenes of the Day of Resurrection.
