A man intended to perform Hajj, and when he was about to depart for Hajj, he passed away. He had sold what he had for the sake of Hajj. What is the ruling on this, and is it valid if he intended that Hajj be performed on his behalf?

The questioner : A man intended to perform Hajj, and when he was about to depart for Hajj, he passed away. He had sold what he had for the sake of Hajj. What is the ruling on this? And is it valid if he intended that Hajj be performed on his behalf? Please advise us, may Allah reward you.

The Shaykh : Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and I send prayers and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions.
This man who resolved to perform Hajj and sold what he had to fund the journey, but death overtook him before he could perform Hajj—we hope that Allah the Exalted will record for him the reward of a pilgrim, because he intended a righteous deed and did what he was able to of its causes. Whoever intends a deed and does what he is able to of its causes, it is recorded for him. Allah Blessed and Exalted is He said:
And whoever leaves his home as an emigrant to Allah and His Messenger and then death overtakes him - his reward has already become incumbent upon Allah
[An-Nisa 4:100]
. And if this man who sold his wealth to perform Hajj did not perform the obligatory Hajj of Islam, then Hajj is performed on his behalf after his death with the money he prepared for this purpose. One of his awliya (close friends of Allah) or someone else performs it on his behalf with that money. This is based on the hadith of Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim:
A woman came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah, my mother vowed to perform Hajj but did not perform it until she died. Should I perform Hajj on her behalf? He said: Yes. أن امرأة جاءت إلى النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، فقالت: يا رسول الله، إن أمي نذرت أن تحج فلم تحج حتى ماتت، أفأحج عنها؟ قال: نعم
And that was during the Farewell Pilgrimage.

The questioner : May Allah bless you.
