The father bequeathed to his son that he perform charity on his behalf after his death, as long as the son is alive

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 8717 )
Q: My father has passed away, and I wish to perform charity on his behalf as long as I am alive. I ask your Eminence for a ruling: What is the best and most excellent month in which this charity is recommended, and is the charity on behalf of the deceased obligatory in any city of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, or in the town where he died? I am a resident of Makkah al-Mukarramah, and the deceased was in the southern region. Please rule on this for us.
A: First: If your father left a legal bequest, it is obligatory for you to carry it out within the limit of one-third of his estate, after settling any debt he owed, if he was in debt. If you voluntarily give charity on his behalf from your own wealth, and you are of sound mind, that is better, and it is kindness to your father for which you will be rewarded, and Allah will benefit him with it, out of His grace and mercy. Second: Choose the charity from the best of your wealth and what is most beloved to you, and distribute it to the poor in the lands that are in the greatest need. If that is in the month of Ramadan, it is better.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
