The questioner : I am a woman married to a man of comfortable means who possesses good qualities except for drinking intoxicants. Based on this, I asked some people, and they said: "Leave him." I found the matter difficult, and I am the mother of five daughters and a young man. Add to this that I have no refuge or support other than Allah, the Exalted, and then my husband. I have no other house to go to or take refuge in, nor do I have brothers. So I boycotted him in the bed. All I want from that is for him to be guided to Allah, and nothing else. But he did not leave the intoxicants. In addition to what I said, he is my maternal uncle's son, is of comfortable means, loves the poor, shows compassion, and helps the needy. He is fulfilling his obligations and has other good qualities. I hope you will issue a ruling for me, O honorable Shaykh, on my matter, which is boycotting him in the bed. May Allah reward you with all good for me?

The Shaykh : The answer to this is directed to your husband and to you. As for your husband, I advise him to repent to Allah, Mighty and Majestic, from drinking intoxicants. For drinking intoxicants is forbidden by the Book of Allah, the Sunnah of His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), and the consensus of the Muslims. Allah the Exalted said:
(90) O you who have believed, indeed, intoxicants, gambling, [sacrificing on] stone alters [to other than Allah], and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid it that you may be successful. (91) Satan only wants to cause between you animosity and hatred through intoxicants and gambling and to avert you from the remembrance of Allah and from prayer. So will you not desist? (92) And obey Allah and obey the Messenger and beware. And if you turn away - then know that upon Our Messenger is only [the responsibility for] clear notification.
[Al-Ma'idah 5:90-92]
And it is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
Every intoxicant is Khamr and every intoxicant is forbidden. كل مسكر خمر وكل مسكر حرام
Sahih Muslim 2003b
And the Muslims agreed upon the prohibition of intoxicants by a definitive consensus with no disagreement among them. So much so that the scholars counted the prohibition of intoxicants among the matters known necessarily from the religion of Islam. They said: Whoever denies the prohibition of intoxicants while living among the Muslims becomes a disbeliever who is given the opportunity to repent. If he repents, well and good; otherwise, he is killed. So I advise you, O brother. I advise you, and then I advise you again, to leave drinking intoxicants and to be content with what Allah has made lawful for you of good drinks, instead of what Allah has forbidden you. Intoxicants are the mother of all evils and the key to every harm. How easy it is to leave it for one whom Allah has guided and granted success, and who is sincere in intention and resolve and seeks help from his Lord, Blessed and Exalted is He.
As for you, your cohabitation with this man is not forbidden or prohibited, because drinking intoxicants does not necessitate that he be a disbeliever. However, you must increase your advice to him, perhaps Allah, the Exalted, will make it beneficial. As for your boycotting him in the bed, if there is a benefit in that for him to be deterred and leave drinking intoxicants, then it is permissible. If there is no benefit in it, then it is not permissible for you to boycott him in the bed, because he has not done a cause that makes him forbidden to you or makes you forbidden to him. We ask Allah for guidance and success for everyone.

The questioner : O Allah, amen.
