Q: I went to perform Hajj as a mutamatti' this year, and after I had performed the 'Umrah of Hajj, praise be to Allah, I went to Mina on approximately the 3rd of Dhu al-Hijjah 1400 AH. After I had exited the state of ihram from the 'Umrah, I felt pain in my knee accompanied by swelling that prevented me from moving or walking. I went to the doctor, and he advised me not to continue with the Hajj, knowing that I truly could not walk even one meter due to the severity of the pain resulting from this. After that, I returned to al-Madinah , where I reside, on the 5th of Dhu al-Hijjah 1400 AH, and I did not perform Hajj, knowing that when I intended
for the 'Umrah, I did not say: "If I am prevented by a preventer, then my place of exiting the state of ihram is where I am prevented," or as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said. Is this a condition? And what I want from your eminence is: Do I owe a sacrificial animal or not? And if the answer is yes, is it permissible for me to have the last one slaughtered in Makkah ?
A: If the situation is as you described, that you exited the state of ihram from your 'Umrah and turned away from the Hajj, and returned to your hometown before entering the state of ihram for it, then you owe nothing; because the 'Umrah was completed by its performance and exiting the state of ihram from it, and you had not yet entered the state of ihram for the Hajj. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
