Q4: I bought agricultural land, and people need to live there. The price was cheap at the time of purchase, but today it has become residential and expensive. Many people are living there on a loan (free of charge). Is it from trade goods that I should appraise and pay zakah on, or does the fact that people are living there without rent suffice until I sell it? Please give us a ruling, may you be rewarded, and may you be granted the good of this world and the bliss of the Hereafter.

As for goods held for trade, you must assess their value after a lunar year has passed since you acquired them for the purpose of trade, and pay zakah on them. In this case, lending them out for residential use is not sufficient to exempt you from paying their zakah. However, if you purchased them for personal use, there is no zakah on them until you intend to trade them; the trade year begins from the time of that intention. This is based on the report of Samurah ibn Jundub (may Allah be pleased with him), who said:
to pay Zakah from (the goods) we had prepared for saleكنا نخرج الصدقة من الذي نعده للبيع
Bulugh al-Maram 4:25
