Fatwa number ( 1936 )
Q: A person from the Rashidi tribe visited us and left a deposit with my father, which turned into a large flock of sheep in my father's possession, and my father forgot the name
of the owner of the deposit, and the owner did not return to us. In the year 1395 AH, my father passed away and left the deposit with me. I ask you to inform me of the Shari'ah ruling regarding it.
A: You must make every possible effort to identify the owner of this deposit. If you find him or find an heir of his, pay his right to him. If you are unable to do so, spend it in a way that brings benefit, with the intention of giving charity on behalf of its owner. If the owner or his heir comes forward after that, inform him of the facts. If he is satisfied, that is well. If he is not satisfied, pay him its value, and you will have the reward of what you paid, if Allah wills.
