Giving away lost property

Fatwa No. ( 3028 )
Q: I found a sum of money amounting to one hundred and fifty riyals, 150, no more, on one of the lines on Saturday, corresponding to 24/5/1399 AH, and I have inquired about it from that date until today, and no one has come forward to claim it. Therefore, I submit this petition to your eminence to inform me in writing: Is it permissible for me to pay it to the Afghanistan committee or not? As the year is about to complete. May Allah preserve you and not deprive you of reward and recompense.
A: Yes, it is permissible for you to pay it to the Afghanistan donation collection committee for Afghanistan after knowing its characteristics by which it is identified. Then, if it happens that someone comes to you who knows it by its characteristics and claims it, inform him of what you have done. If he is satisfied, that is fine; otherwise, pay
the amount to him, and you will have its reward. You may also take possession of it and spend it on your needs, in which case, if its owner comes, it is as previously stated.
