Breaking the fast at the dawn of another country
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 1138 )
Q: There are some people from the desert who broke their fast one day before 'Id al-Fitr, which was a Sunday. What forced them to do so was the radio broadcasts announcing the 'Id on the night of Sunday, and they assumed it was a Kingdom broadcast. They did not know that the Kingdom was still fasting until the Riyadh radio announced the 'Id on the night of Monday. Do they have to make up the fast or pay an expiation? Please inform us.
A: If the situation is as you described, then whoever broke his fast on Sunday must fast one day in its place; because it was a day of Ramadan, since the sighting of the Shawwal crescent was not confirmed in the Kingdom until the night of Monday. No one who broke his fast owes an expiation; because there was an excuse in the matter. They should strive to verify the sighting and its confirmation in the Kingdom in the future; as a precaution for their fasting. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
