Fatwa No. ( 2031 )
Q: What is the method by which the first day of every lunar month is established?
A: The authentic hadiths from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) indicate that whenever a trustworthy person sees the crescent moon after the sunset on the night of the thirtieth of Sha'ban, or trustworthy people see it on the night of the thirtieth of Ramadan, the sighting is considered valid, and the first day of the month is known by it without the need to consider the duration the moon remains after the sunset, whether it is twenty minutes or less or more; because there is nothing in the authentic hadiths
that indicates a specific determination in minutes for the moon's setting after the sunset. The Council of Senior Scholars in the Kingdom has agreed with what we have mentioned. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
