Giving Zakah to Sisters and the Wife’s Father
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 12826 )
Q: I work in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia , and so does my wife, and we have surplus wealth beyond our needs, which is subject to zakah. I have full siblings (on both the father’s and mother’s side), who work on a small piece of agricultural land in Egypt . They have children, and their income barely covers their needs for food, drink, clothing, and other necessities, or it does not cover them, as some of them have nine children in addition to their wives, and some have seven in addition to their wives. At the same time, I have a full brother (on both the father’s and mother’s side) who has passed away, leaving behind children, some of whom have graduated from university and gotten married, and some of whom are still in university. Their mother was widowed after my brother’s death and has not remarried, and she lives with them. The question is: Am I allowed to give them from the zakah of my wealth and my wife’s wealth? Also, my wife’s father works as an employee in a government administration in Egypt , and he has an income that barely covers the necessities of life, except that he has two sons and a daughter studying at different educational levels—one of whom is studying for the general secondary certificate in the country of Yemen , and he needs many expenses that his father cannot afford. The question is also: Are my wife and I allowed to give her father from the zakah of our wealth as well?
A: It is permissible for you to give your full siblings and your wife’s father from the zakah whatever is sufficient for them, if what comes to them is not sufficient for them. As for your wife, it is not permissible for her to give anything from her zakah to her father.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his companions.
