Giving Zakah for Road Repairs
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 2306 )
Q: I collected the zakah of my wealth and used it to open a road in the village at the top of a mountain, where they have no road, and many of them are poor and have no money.
Knowing that the amount of this zakah is 850 riyals, I ask you to clarify to me whether this zakah absolves my obligation and makes my wealth lawful, or not? Knowing that I am one of those who need this.
A: The zakah you paid in the manner mentioned is not sufficient; rather, it is a voluntary charity from you to the people of the town. You must pay the zakah and distribute it in its prescribed channels mentioned in the saying of Allah the Exalted:[At-Tawbah 9:60] And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.

Zakah expenditures are only for the poor and for the needy and for those employed to collect [zakah] and for bringing hearts together [for Islam] and for freeing captives [or slaves] and for those in debt and for the cause of Allah and for the [stranded] traveler
