Zakat on Cattle
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 971 )
Q: It includes that he has twenty head of cattle which he invests in producing milk that he sells in the markets, and he asks whether zakah is obligatory on them?
A: If the livestock are not prepared for trade, then zakat is not obligatory on them except under two conditions: The first: that they be grazing. The second: that they reach the nisab, and the minimum nisab for cattle is thirty cows. If they are prepared for trade, then zakat is obligatory on them if their value reaches the nisab or more. Since the questioner mentioned that the total of what he owns is twenty cows, that they are not grazing, and that he owns them for utilization rather than for trade by buying and selling, if that is the case, then there is no zakat on them. Rather, zakat is obligatory on the value of their milk if it reaches the nisab or more and a lunar year has passed over it. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
