Sleeping on the ground for forty days after burial

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The first question of Fatwa No. ( 5275 )
Q1: The method of holding mourning gatherings from an Islamic perspective, the practice in the Sudanese village of sleeping on the ground and not using perfume for forty days for the majority of relatives and neighbors, and the practice of slaughtering animals one week after the date of death in the name of charity, so it is requested to clarify the Islamic ruling on this.
A1: The custom of people holding mourning gatherings and sitting for them for the sake of condolence is a religious innovation (bid'ah); because it contradicts the practice of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions (may Allah be pleased with them). Likewise, sleeping on the ground and relatives and neighbors refraining from using perfume for forty days or days for the sake of the death of one of them is an invented innovation, and the custom of slaughtering animals after one week or forty days, for example, from the date of death with the intention of charity on behalf of the deceased or offering the slaughtered animals to those who come to the family of the deceased is also an invented innovation. So it is obligatory to abandon these customs and get rid of them, and to disapprove of
the one who does it; because of the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
'A'isha reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: He who innovates things in our affairs for which there is no valid (reason) (commits sin) and these are to be rejected.من أحدث في أمرنا هذا ما ليس منه فهو رد
Sahih Muslim 1718a
It is agreed upon as authentic. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
