The first question of Fatwa No. ( 145 )
Q1: If you are traveling on an airplane and the time for prayer arrives, is it permissible for us to pray on the airplane or not?
A1: If the time for prayer arrives and the airplane is still in flight, and there is a fear of missing the time for prayer before it lands at one of the airports, the scholars have agreed that it is obligatory to perform it to the extent of one's ability, with bowing, prostration, and facing the qiblah; based on the saying of Allah the Exalted:[At-Taghabun 64:16] and the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): Sahih al-Bukhari 7288. However, if it is known that it will land before the time for prayer ends, with enough time to perform it, or if the prayer is one that can be combined with another, such as the Zuhr prayer with the 'Asr prayer, or the Maghrib prayer with the 'Isha' prayer, and it is known that it will land before the time for the second prayer ends, with enough time to perform both, the majority of scholars held that it is permissible to perform it on the airplane; because it is obligatory to perform it upon the entry of its time according to one's ability, as mentioned above, and this is the correct view. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.

إذا أمرتكم بأمر فأتوا منه ما استطعتم
