The Ruling on the Funeral Prayer

Machine translationRead the Arabic original

The sixth question of Fatwa No. ( 2767 )

Q6: Who are the deceased for whom it is not obligatory for a Muslim to pray, and who are the deceased for whom it is obligatory for a Muslim to pray?
A6: The evidence from Islamic law indicates that the funeral prayer is obligatory for the deceased Muslims, whether they are righteous or open sinners, as long as their open sinfulness has not reached the level of associating partners with Allah; because of His saying, the Exalted:
Indeed, Allah does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He willsإِنَّ اللَّهَ لاَ يَغْفِرُ أَنْ يُشْرَكَ بِهِ وَيَغْفِرُ مَا دُونَ ذَلِكَ لِمَنْ يَشَاءُ
[An-Nisa 4:48]
, and it is hoped for their righteous ones, and feared for their wrongdoers. As for the disbeliever, whether Jewish, Christian, atheist, or superstitious; such as worshippers of shrines, callers to the dead, and the like, no prayer is offered for them. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
