Fatwa number ( 7646 )
Q: I have become accustomed to listening to foreign radio stations in Arabic, and the Call to Islam radio station from Makkah al-Mukarramah; this is solely for the purpose of benefiting from their language. Their programs include some idle talk. Is it permissible to listen to idle talk for the sake of the language of the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? If a student of knowledge does not find in the scholarly books what satisfies his thirst, is it permissible for him to read the books of storytellers for the sake of the language?
A: First: What is broadcast via radio stations, including the recitation of the Qur'an, the Prophetic hadiths, lectures, fatwas, seminars, and correct, beneficial stories in the Arabic language, is sufficient for one who wants to learn the Arabic language, benefit from its styles, know its vocabulary, take lessons from the moral examples contained therein, and benefit from the high wisdom, noble objectives, and lofty morals it contains, instead of listening to the idle talk that is broadcast via
radio stations. Second: The recitation of the Book of Allah the Exalted, and reading what is authentic from the hadith of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), the reports, wisdom, and stories from the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) and their like, and pure books of literature in prose and poetry, and similar books written in the Arabic language, are sufficient for learning religion and the Arabic language, instead of reading books of false stories and obscene poetry. In summary, the truth broadcast in the Arabic language, in the Qur'an, hadiths, reports, and authentic stories, and the books written with the aim of good, is sufficient for one who wants to learn the Arabic language and know his religion, while remaining safe and elevated from what is not befitting of the base matters. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
