The additional prayer is better than sleep in the Fajr prayer

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The first question of Fatwa number ( 1396 )
Q1: Is "The prayer is better than sleep" in the first adhan or the second adhan of Fajr? The reason for the question is that the brothers in Khartoum have seen what the author of the book (Subul al-Salam) mentioned: that "The prayer is better than sleep" is said in the first adhan, contrary to the practice of Muslims now, especially in this Kingdom which is the qiblah of Muslims in adhering to the Book and the Sunnah?
A1: The hadiths reported in this chapter include some that scholars of al-jarh wa al-ta'dil (the critique and vindication of narrators) have said are defective, and some that some of them have authenticated. This is from one side. From the other side, there are reports indicating that the tathwib (the phrase "The prayer is better than sleep") is in the first adhan, and reports indicating that it is in the second adhan. Al-Sarraj , Al-Tabarani , and Al-Bayhaqi narrated from the hadith of Ibn 'Ujlan from Nafi' from Ibn 'Umar who said:
The first adhan was after "Hayya 'ala al-salah, Hayya 'ala al-falah" (Come to prayer, Come to success), (The prayer is better than sleep) twiceكان الأذان الأول بعد حي على الصلاة حي على الفلاح (الصلاة خير من النوم) مرتين
As-Sunan al-Kubra lil-Nasa'i 6:328
. Ibn Hajar said: "And its chain is hasan (good)." And Al-Ya'mari said: "And this is a sahih (authentic) chain." And Ibn Khuzaymah , Al-Daraqutni , and Al-Bayhaqi narrated from Anas that he said:
It is from the Sunnah that when the Mu'adhadhin says [in the first Adhan of] Fajr (prayer time): 'Haiya 'alal-Falah (Come to the success)', he says (also) 'as-Salatu khairun minan-nawm (Prayer is better than sleep).'من السنة إذا قال المؤذن في الفجر: (حي على الفلاح) قال: (الصلاة خير من النوم)
Bulugh al-Maram 2:34
. Al-Ya'mari said: "And it is a sahih (authentic) chain." And Imam Baqi ibn Makhlad said: " Yahya ibn 'Abd al-Hamid narrated to us, Abu Bakr ibn 'Iyash narrated to us, and 'Abd al-'Aziz ibn Rafi' narrated to me: I heard Abu Mahdhurah say:
I was a young boy when I called the adhan before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) for Fajr on the day of Hunayn. When I reached "Hayya 'ala al-falah" (Come to success), he said: "Add to it 'The prayer is better than sleep'"كنت غلامًا صبيًّا فأذنت بين يدي رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم الفجر يوم حنين، فلما انتهيت إلى حي على الفلاح قال: ألحق فيها الصلاة خير من النوم
. And Al-Nasa'i narrated it from another route from Abu Ja'far from Abu Sulayman , from Abu Mahdhurah, and Ibn Hazm authenticated it. It can be said that what indicates that the tathwib is said in the first adhan and what indicates that it is said in the second adhan: it was originally in the first adhan, then the matter settled on it being said in the second adhan, in order to implement all the evidence in this matter, each in its time. It is also possible that the "first adhan" mentioned in that refers to the indication that this phrase is said in the adhan and not in the iqamah; because the iqamah is called the "second adhan," and because it is called the "second adhan" along with the adhan; as in the hadith:
Between every two calls (to prayer) there is a Salatبين كل أذانين صلاة
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 185Sahih (Darussalam)
. And the hadith of 'A'ishah in Abu Dawud points to this, as it is clearly indicative that the "first adhan" intended is the last adhan of Fajr, and it was called "first" to distinguish it from the iqamah.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his companions.
