Moses Seeking Rain for His People

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The first question of Fatwa No. ( 5566 ):
Q1: I have started reading [the Tafsir of Ibn Kathir ], which I borrowed from a friend. I am reading the Tafsir of Surat al-Baqarah, verse 60, and then I will answer this question: Did the water gushing forth (twelve springs) occur during the journey of the Children of Israel in the wilderness for forty (40) years, or after the conquest of Bayt al-Maqdis ? It is not clear in the Tafsir whether it was during their journey before the conquest of Bayt al-Maqdis or after that, or whether it was a portable stone that they carried with them, and whenever they stopped, Moses would strike it with his staff?
Vol. 1 : Allah the Exalted said:
And [recall] when Moses prayed for water for his people, so We said, "Strike with your staff the stone." And there gushed forth from it twelve springs, and every people knew its watering place. "Eat and drink from the provision of Allah, and do not commit abuse on the earth, spreading corruption."
[Al-Baqarah 2:60]
, Allah the Exalted commanded His Messenger and His intimate friend Musa (peace be upon him), when he asked for water, to strike the rock with his staff. When he struck it, twelve springs gushed forth from it, corresponding to the number of the tribes, to provide them with ample space so that they would not crowd or fight over the water. This was a prophetic miracle for Musa (peace be upon him) from Allah the Exalted and a mercy from Him to Musa and those with him from the Children of Israel . This is the place of proof and support, and the site of grace and lesson. And He, Glorified and Exalted is He, did not inform us about the other conditions of the rock and their details, and if there had been
mentioning that, the Wise, the All-Knowing would have clarified it, and your Lord is not forgetful. And to our knowledge, no hadith from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has been established regarding the details of its conditions. If there had been good in it, the Subtle, the All-Aware would have revealed it to His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) so that he could convey it to the people as a mercy for them. And Ibn Kathir transmitted in his Tafsir of this verse from al-Thawri from Abu Sa'id from Ikrimah from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said: (When Moses struck the stone with his staff, it was in the wilderness, and it became twelve springs of water, with one spring for each tribe from which they drink). And he transmitted from Mujahid something similar. In summary, the good for the Muslim is to be content with what Allah the Exalted has mentioned, or what is established in the Sunnah, and not to delve into matters for which no text has been established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). And success is from Allah. And may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
