Exegesis of the saying of Allah the Exalted: “And when Moses asked for water for his people, We said: Strike the stone with your staff, and there burst forth from it twelve springs. Every people knew their place of drinking.”

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He, said:
And [recall] when Moses prayed for water for his people, so We said, "Strike with your staff the stone." And there gushed forth from it twelve springsوإذ استسقى موسى لقومه فقلنا اضرب بعصاك الحجر فانفجرت منه اثنتا عشرة عينا
[Al-Baqarah 2:60]

His saying:
He asked for waterاستسقى
means he requested, and that was when they were in the wilderness, or it is that wherever a need for water arises, he asks for it and they are relieved.
And His saying:
Strike with your staffاضرب بعصاك

And His saying:
the stoneالحجر
It has been mentioned previously that the correct view regarding it is that the generic meaning is intended, meaning any stone, not a specific known stone, because this is more eloquent in terms of the miracle and the sign.
and there burst forth from itفانفجرت منه
Bursting forth means opening and splitting, and from this the dawn is named, because the horizon splits with it, so the meaning of
burst forthانفجرت
is that these springs split forth from it.
And [recall] when Moses prayed for water for his people, so We said, "Strike with your staff the stone." And there gushed forth from it twelve springs, and every people knew its watering place. "Eat and drink from the provision of Allah, and do not commit abuse on the earth, spreading corruption."اثنتا عشرة عينا
[Al-Baqarah 2:60]
Springs is a specification of the number, because twelve is indefinite, meaning twelve what? So he specified it by saying:
springsعينا
, and the difference between the state (hal) and the specification (tamyiz) is that the state is understood with the preposition "in," and we said that the specification is understood with the preposition "from." For example, you say: The man came riding, meaning in the state of riding, and you say: He was covered with sweat from shame, meaning from the sweat,
And [recall] when Moses prayed for water for his people, so We said, "Strike with your staff the stone." And there gushed forth from it twelve springs, and every people knew its watering place. "Eat and drink from the provision of Allah, and do not commit abuse on the earth, spreading corruption."اثنتا عشرة عينا
[Al-Baqarah 2:60]
meaning twelve from the springs, as Allah the Exalted said:
and caused to burst forth therefrom some springs -وفجرنا فيها من العيون
[Ya-Sin 36:34]
Otherwise, each of them clarifies an indefinite, each of them is in the accusative case, and each of them is indefinite, but the specification clarifies the entities, and the state clarifies the conditions, and the second difference is that the specification is understood with "from" and the state is understood with "in."
Meaning not one spring, but twelve springs. Why? Because the Children of Israel were twelve tribes, and therefore the springs were one for each tribe.
Allah the Exalted said:
and every people knewقد علم كل أناس
[Al-Baqarah 2:60]
Meaning from the tribes,
every people knew its watering placeكل أناس مشربهم
[Al-Baqarah 2:60]
their place of drinking, so that some of them would not mix with others and some would not inconvenience others, and this is a favor of Allah upon them, meaning upon the Children of Israel, and it is a favor of Allah upon Moses. As for the favor of Allah upon Moses through it, it is because it is a sign that confirms him and authenticates him, and as for the favor of Allah upon the Children of Israel through it, it is because it removed their thirst and parchedness.
The scholars said: There is no sign among the signs of the messengers except that the Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, has of its kind or something greater. All the signs of the messengers are for the Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, either directly or of their kind, but some of them occurred to him personally and some occurred to his followers, for the miracles of the awliya (close friends of Allah) are signs for the prophets. They said that what occurred to the Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, regarding the bursting forth of springs is greater than what occurred to Moses, because the springs burst forth from the vessel, so water gushed from between his fingers like springs, and he was in the vessel, and it is not the custom of a vessel to burst forth, whereas it is the custom of stones for what bursts forth from them to burst forth
For indeed, there are stones from which rivers burst forth وإن من الحجارة لما يتفجر منه الأنهار
[Al-Baqarah 2:74]
So what occurred to the Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, is greater than what occurred to Moses, peace and blessings be upon him.
