Image-making with a camera for family photos
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The first question of Fatwa number ( 2296 ):
Q1: What is the ruling on taking family photos with a camera and similar things, solely for the sake of remembrance and entertainment, and nothing else?
A1: Taking images of living beings is forbidden, indeed it is among the major sins, whether the photographer makes it his profession or not, and whether the image-making is by engraving, drawing with a pen or the like, photographing with a camera or similar devices, carving stones or the like, etc. It is also forbidden whether it is for remembrance or for any other purpose. This is based on the hadiths reported on the matter, which are general regarding the types of image-making and images of living beings. Nothing is excepted from this except what is necessitated by dire necessity. And success is from Allah. May Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
