Fatwa No. ( 5959 ):
Praise be to Allah alone, and may blessings and peace be upon His Messenger, his family, and his Companions. And to proceed: The Permanent Committee for Scholarly Research and Ifta has reviewed the question submitted by Dr. Nizar ibn Muhammad Fatah to His Eminence the President General, and referred to the Committee under number 1007 on 10/5/1403 AH, which reads: “The specialized hospital has good internal communication systems that allow the person being called to interrupt an incoming call and switch to another call for a period that may be long or short, depending on the need, and then return to the suspended call. During the aforementioned interruption, the speaker can listen to appropriate recorded material. We wished to fill this interruption period with religious material, whether excerpts from the Noble Qur'an or from the Noble Hadiths. Since worldly matters may be interspersed with the interruptions, involving seriousness and joking depending on the status and circumstances of the speakers, we deemed it necessary to seek your Eminence's opinion before introducing such religious material.” .
And it responded as follows: First: It is not permissible to interrupt or suspend a call; because of the harm involved, except when there is a necessity that calls for it, such as the speaker committing an offense that does not cease
except by interrupting the call, or the occurrence of a necessary or better matter that calls for suspending or interrupting it. Second: The Noble Qur'an is the speech of Allah the Exalted, so it must be respected and protected from what is unworthy of it, such as mixing it with joking or banter that precedes or follows its recitation, and from using it as entertainment or to fill a void, as you mentioned. Rather, one should intend to recite it as a primary intention; as worship of Allah and to draw near to Him, while reflecting on its meanings and taking heed of its admonitions, not merely for entertainment, amusement, and filling a void. Likewise, the Hadiths of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) must not be mixed with joking and banter; rather, care must be taken with them, and they must be protected from what is unworthy, and one should turn to them to understand the rulings of the Shari'ah from them and act in accordance with their implications. And success is from Allah. May Allah send blessings and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
