The first question of Fatwa No. ( 2638 ):
Q1: Whatis the point of articulation of the letter (ḍād), and with what sound does it appear when it is pronounced from its original point of articulation? Some people in our countryPakistan and Indiarecite it as (ghadwād) or (adwād) or similar to the thick dāl, so the sound of the letter appears in His saying, the Exalted:, and not the ghadwāleens, or not the dāwāleens, or not the dawlāleens in that order, and the others among them recite it similar to the dotted ḍāʾ, except that the difference appears clearly between the pronunciation of the ḍād and the ḍāʾ according to the point of articulation, so the first group issued a ruling of non
It is not permissible to pray behind the second group, or at least that the reward and recompense is diminished. O you scholars of the clear truth, clarify the point of articulation of the letter ḍād and the difference between it and the dotted ḍāʾ, and also detail the issue from the perspective of the Shari'ah, judging between the two groups mentioned?
A1: First: The point of articulation of ḍād is from one of the sides of the tongue, the right or the left, after the point of articulation of yāʾ and before the point of articulation of lām, near the molars. Lām is articulated from the side of the tongue closest to the front of the mouth. The sound of ḍād is approximately between the sound of the thick dāl and the dotted ḍāʾ. Pronouncing ḍād as mentioned in the question is incorrect. Second: Whoever is able to perfect the letter ḍād so that he articulates it from its correct point of articulation, it is obligatory for him to do so. And whoever is unable to correct his tongue in the letter ḍād or any other letter, he is excused and his prayer is valid. He should not lead prayer except with someone like him or worse, but what is excused in the matter of ḍād and ḍāʾ is not excused in others; due to the closeness of their points of articulation and the difficulty of distinguishing between them in speech, as stated by a group of scholars, among them al-Hafiz Ibn Kathir in his tafsir of Surat al-Fatihah. And success is from Allah. And may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
