The Intercession of the Prophet (peace be upon him) is established in the Qur'an

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The sixth question of Fatwa No. ( 9184 ):
Q6: How does the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) intercede for his Ummah with his Lord on the Day of Resurrection, and how do the Companions, the righteous, and the angels intercede for sinners? And regarding the hadith:
My intercession is for the people who committed the major sins in my Ummah.شفاعتي لأهل الكبائر من أمتي
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2435Sahih (Darussalam)
, is its chain authentic, and what is its meaning if the hadith is authentic?

A6 : The intercession of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and the intercession of the righteous on the Day of Resurrection is established in the Qur'an, and authentic hadiths have been reported regarding it that explain what came in the Qur'an, including the hadith you referred to in your question. They are of different types. The Shaykh 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Hasan (may Allah have mercy on him) said in the book *Fath al-Majid*: (He also mentioned, may Allah have mercy on him — meaning Ibn al-Qayyim — that intercession is of six types. The first: The Great Intercession, for which the resolute prophets (peace and blessings be upon them) wait until it reaches him (peace and blessings be upon him), and he says: "I am for it." This is when the creation turn to the prophets to intercede for them with their Lord so that He may relieve them from their standing in the Place of Standing. This is an intercession in which he is exclusive, and no one shares it with him.
The second: His intercession for the people of Paradise to enter it, which Abu Hurayrah mentioned in his long hadith agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim. The third: His intercession for a group of transgressors from his Ummah who have earned the Fire by their sins, interceding for them so that they do not enter it. End of quote. The fourth: His intercession for the transgressors among the people of tawhid (the oneness of Allah) who enter the Fire by their sins. The hadiths regarding this are mutawatir (mass-transmitted) from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Companions and the people of the Sunnah unanimously agreed upon it, declaring as innovators those who denied it, shouting against them from every side, and calling them misguided. The fifth: His intercession for a group of the people of Paradise to increase their reward and elevate their ranks. This is something in which no one has disputed, and all of these are exclusive to the people of sincerity who did not take any other than Allah as a wali (close friend of Allah) or an intercessor, as Allah the Exalted said:
And warn by the Qur'an those who fear that they will be gathered before their Lord - for them besides Him will be no protector and no intercessorوَأَنْذِرْ بِهِ الَّذِينَ يَخَافُونَ أَنْ يُحْشَرُوا إِلَى رَبِّهِمْ لَيْسَ لَهُمْ مِنْ دُونِهِ وَلِيٌّ وَلاَ شَفِيعٌ
[Al-An'am 6:51]
. The sixth: His intercession for some of his disbelieving relatives from the people of the Fire so that their punishment is lightened. This is specific to Abu Talib alone. End of quote. And success is from Allah. And may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
