Ruling on the call for rapprochement between religions

The second question of Fatwa No. ( 7807 ):
Q2: Is the call for rapprochement between religions (Islam, Christianity, and Judaism) a legitimate call according to the Shari'ah? And is it permissible for a truly believing Muslim to call for it and work to strengthen it? I have heard that scholars at al-Azhar and other Islamic institutions are doing such things. Also, is there any benefit for Muslims in a call for rapprochement between the people of the Sunnah and the community and the sects: the Shi'ah, the Druze, the Isma'iliyyah, the Nusayriyyah , and others? Is such a meeting possible, and indeed, do not all these sects hold in their beliefs shirk (associating partners with Allah), insult to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and hatred toward Islam and the people of the Sunnah and the community ? Is this meeting and rapprochement permissible according to the Shari'ah?
A2: First: The foundations of faith that Allah sent down in His books to His messengers: the Torah, the Gospel, the Psalms, and the Qur'an, to which His messengers (peace be upon them all), including Ibrahim, Musa, Isa, and other prophets and messengers, called, are all one. The earlier ones gave glad tidings of the later ones, and the later ones confirmed and supported the earlier ones, and praised their status. Although the branches differ in general according to the requirements of circumstances and times and the benefit of the servants, this is wisdom from Allah and justice, and mercy and favor from Him (Glorified and Exalted is He). Allah the Exalted said:
The Messenger has believed in what was revealed to him from his Lord, and [so have] the believers. All of them have believed in Allah and His angels and His books and His messengers, [saying], "We make no distinction between any of His messengers." And they say, "We hear and we obey. [We seek] Your forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the [final] destination."
And He the Exalted said:
But they who believe in Allah and His messengers and do not discriminate between any of them - to those He is going to give their rewards. And ever is Allah Forgiving and Merciful.
(81) And [recall, O People of the Scripture], when Allah took the covenant of the prophets, [saying], "Whatever I give you of the Scripture and wisdom and then there comes to you a messenger confirming what is with you, you [must] believe in him and support him." [Allah] said, "Have you acknowledged and taken upon that My commitment?" They said, "We have acknowledged it." He said, "Then bear witness, and I am with you among the witnesses." (82) And whoever turned away after that - they were the defiantly disobedient. (83) So is it other than the religion of Allah they desire, while to Him have submitted [all] those within the heavens and earth, willingly or by compulsion, and to Him they will be returned?
(84) Say, "We have believed in Allah and in what was revealed to us and what was revealed to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and the Descendants, and in what was given to Moses and Jesus and to the prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and we are Muslims [submitting] to Him." (85) And whoever desires other than Islam as religion - never will it be accepted from him, and he, in the Hereafter, will be among the losers.
(89) Those are the ones to whom We gave the Scripture and authority and prophethood. But if the disbelievers deny it, then We have entrusted it to a people who are not therein disbelievers. (90) Those are the ones whom Allah has guided, so from their guidance take an example. Say, "I ask of you for this message no payment. It is not but a reminder for the worlds."
And He the Exalted said:
Indeed, the most worthy of Abraham among the people are those who followed him [in submission to Allah] and this prophet, and those who believe [in his message]. And Allah is the ally of the believers.
Then We revealed to you, [O Muhammad], to follow the religion of Abraham, inclining toward truth; and he was not of those who associate with Allah.
And [mention] when Jesus, the son of Mary, said, "O children of Israel, indeed I am the messenger of Allah to you confirming what came before me of the Torah and bringing good tidings of a messenger to come after me, whose name is Ahmad."
And We have revealed to you, [O Muhammad], the Book in truth, confirming that which preceded it of the Scripture and as a criterion over it. So judge between them by what Allah has revealed and do not follow their inclinations away from what has come to you of the truth. To each of you We prescribed a law and a method
I am the closest of people to 'Isa ibn Maryam in this world and the Hereafter. The prophets are brothers through paternal uncles; their mothers are different, but their religion is one.
أنا أولى الناس بعيسى ابن مريم في الدنيا والآخرة، الأنبياء إخوة لعلات، أمهاتهم شتى ودينهم واحدand that he was afflicted with weariness from creating the heavens and the earth and what is between them in six days, so He rested on the Sabbath. And their claim that they crucified Isa (peace be upon him) and killed him. Among this is that they permitted hunting on the Sabbath by a trick, although Allah had forbidden it for them. And that they abolished the hadd punishment for zina (unlawful sexual intercourse) for the married. And among this is their saying:
Indeed, Allah is poor, while we are rich.
The hand of Allah is chained
(79) So woe to those who write the "scripture" with their own hands, then say, "This is from Allah," in order to exchange it for a small price. Woe to them for what their hands have written and woe to them for what they earn. (80) And they say, "Never will the Fire touch us, except for a few days." Say, "Have you taken a covenant with Allah? For Allah will never break His covenant. Or do you say about Allah that which you do not know?"
And He the Exalted said:
And they say, "None will enter Paradise except one who is a Jew or a Christian." That is [merely] their wishful thinking, Say, "Produce your proof, if you should be truthful."
(135) They say, "Be Jews or Christians [so] you will be guided." Say, "Rather, [we follow] the religion of Abraham, inclining toward truth, and he was not of the polytheists." (136) Say, [O believers], "We have believed in Allah and what has been revealed to us and what has been revealed to Abraham and Ishmael and Isaac and Jacob and the Descendants and what was given to Moses and Jesus and what was given to the prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and we are Muslims [in submission] to Him."
And indeed, there is among them a party who alter the Scripture with their tongues so you may think it is from the Scripture, but it is not from the Scripture. And they say, "This is from Allah," but it is not from Allah. And they speak untruth about Allah while they know.
(155) And [We cursed them] for their breaking of the covenant and their disbelief in the signs of Allah and their killing of the prophets without right and their saying, "Our hearts are wrapped". Rather, Allah has sealed them because of their disbelief, so they believe not, except for a few. (156) And [We cursed them] for their disbelief and their saying against Mary a great slander, (157) And [for] their saying, "Indeed, we have killed the Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, the messenger of Allah." And they did not kill him, nor did they crucify him; but [another] was made to resemble him to them. And indeed, those who differ over it are in doubt about it. They have no knowledge of it except the following of assumption. And they did not kill him, for certain. (158) Rather, Allah raised him to Himself. And ever is Allah Exalted in Might and Wise.
And He the Exalted said:
But the Jews and the Christians say, "We are the children of Allah and His beloved." Say, "Then why does He punish you for your sins?" Rather, you are human beings from among those He has created
(30) The Jews say, "Ezra is the son of Allah "; and the Christians say, "The Messiah is the son of Allah." That is their statement from their mouths; they imitate the saying of those who disbelieved [before them]. May Allah destroy them; how are they deluded? (31) They have taken their scholars and monks as lords besides Allah, and [also] the Messiah, the son of Mary
Many of the People of the Scripture wish they could turn you back to disbelief after you have believed, out of envy from themselves [even] after the truth has become clear to them
For this reason, the Messenger of Allah, Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), was sent to them and to other nations in general, to clarify what they were hiding of the truth, to reveal to them what they had concealed, to correct for them what they had corrupted of beliefs and rulings, and to guide them and others to the straight path. Allah the Exalted said:
(15) O People of the Scripture, there has come to you Our Messenger making clear to you much of what you used to conceal of the Scripture and overlooking much. There has come to you from Allah a light and a clear Book. (16) By which Allah guides those who pursue His pleasure to the ways of peace and brings them out from darknesses into the light, by His permission, and guides them to a straight path.
O People of the Scripture, there has come to you Our Messenger to make clear to you [the religion] after a period [of suspension] of messengers, lest you say, "There came not to us any bringer of good tidings or a warner." But there has come to you a bringer of good tidings and a warner. And Allah is over all things competent.
Many of the People of the Scripture wish they could turn you back to disbelief after you have believed, out of envy from themselves [even] after the truth has become clear to them
And when there came to them a Book from Allah confirming that which was with them - although before they used to pray for victory against those who disbelieved - but [then] when there came to them that which they recognized, they disbelieved in it; so the curse of Allah will be upon the disbelievers.
And He said:
And when a messenger from Allah came to them confirming that which was with them, a party of those who had been given the Scripture threw the Scripture of Allah behind their backs as if they did not know [what it contained].
(1) Those who disbelieved among the People of the Scripture and the polytheists were not to be parted [from misbelief] until there came to them clear evidence - (2) A Messenger from Allah, reciting purified scriptures
Do you covet [the hope, O believers], that they would believe for you while a party of them used to hear the words of Allah and then distort the Torah after they had understood it while they were knowing?
(119) Indeed, We have sent you, [O Muhammad], with the truth as a bringer of good tidings and a warner, and you will not be asked about the companions of Hellfire. (120) And never will the Jews or the Christians approve of you until you follow their religion. Say, "Indeed, the guidance of Allah is the [only] guidance." If you were to follow their desires after what has come to you of knowledge, you would have against Allah no protector or helper.
How shall Allah guide a people who disbelieved after their belief and had witnessed that the Messenger is true and clear signs had come to them? And Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people.
Rather, if they are not more severe than their brothers the polytheists in disbelief and enmity toward Allah, His Messenger, and the believers, they are like them. And Allah the Exalted said to His Messenger regarding the polytheists:
(8) Then do not obey the deniers. (9) They wish that you would soften [in your position], so they would soften [toward you].
(1) Say, "O disbelievers, (2) I do not worship what you worship. (3) Nor are you worshippers of what I worship. (4) Nor will I be a worshipper of what you worship. (5) Nor will you be worshippers of what I worship. (6) For you is your religion, and for me is my religion."
Fourth: If someone were to say: Is it possible for a truce to be established between these people, or for them to conclude a true peace treaty, securing our blood and avoiding the calamities of war, enabling people to travel the earth and strive in life to earn a livelihood, cultivate the world, call to the truth, and guide creation, establishing justice among
the people of the world? If that were said in a reasonable way and the effort to achieve it were a successful effort, and the intention toward it were a noble intention with its place and great impact, but while maintaining the establishment of truth and its victory, so that it is not on the path of Muslims compromising with polytheists or yielding anything of the ruling of Allah, or anything of their honor and their humiliation of themselves, but while preserving their dignity and holding fast to the Book of their Lord and the Sunnah of their Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), acting according to the guidance of the Qur'an and following the noble Messenger (peace be upon him), Allah the Exalted said:
And if they incline to peace, then incline to it [also] and rely upon Allah. Indeed, it is He who is the Hearing, the Knowing.
So do not weaken and call for peace while you are superior; and Allah is with you and will never deprive you of [the reward of] your deeds.
The reality of life is the strongest evidence and the most truthful witness to this for anyone who is fair to themselves, or who listens and has a balanced temperament and thought, and is free from fanaticism and argumentation. Indeed, in that is a reminder for one who has a heart or who lends an ear while being a witness. And Allah is the Guide to the straight path, and He is sufficient for us and is the best Disposer of affairs. Fifth: The Druze, Nusayriyyah, Isma'iliyyah, and those who follow their example from the Babiyyah and the Baha'iyyah have played with the texts of the religion, legislating for themselves what Allah has not permitted, and following the path of the Jews and the Christians in distortion and alteration; following their desires and imitating the leader of the first fitnah: 'Abd Allah ibn Saba' al-Himari, the head of innovation, misguidance, and sowing discord among the Muslim community. His evil and harm became widespread, and many groups were led astray by him, so they became disbelievers after having been Muslims, and division became entrenched among the Muslims because of him. Thus, the call for rapprochement between these sects and the sincere Muslim community is a call that is not beneficial, and the effort to achieve a meeting between them and the sincere Muslims is a failed effort; because they, along with the Jews and the Christians, have hearts that are similar in deviation, atheism, disbelief, misguidance, hatred of the Muslims, and plotting against them, even if their motives, inclinations, objectives, and desires vary. So their likeness in this is like the likeness of the Jews and the Christians with the Muslims. For a certain reason, a group of scholars from al-Azhar in Egypt, along with the Iranian Rafidi al-Qummi, after World War II,
worked hard at the so-called rapprochement, and a few of the sincere senior scholars were deceived by it, those whose hearts were purified and whom life had not hardened. They issued a magazine they named: (The Magazine of Rapprochement). Soon, their affair became clear to those who had been deceived by them, and the affair of the group of rapprochement ended in failure. And there is no wonder, for hearts are diverse, ideas are contradictory, and beliefs are conflicting. Far be it, far be it, that opposites should unite or that contradictions should agree. And success is from Allah. And may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
