Slaughter for the Treatment of Illness
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The first question of Fatwa No. ( 9258 ):
Q1: My wife is suffering from an illness called al-Zar, which is a type of epilepsy. It is the result of our associating with people who have this condition; if they like a person or befriend them, they give them to them. When it comes to her, she does not recover until
one of these friends performs a treatment for her. The question is that my wife wants me to slaughter a sheep for her for Allah the Exalted to cure her of this illness. I do not know whether it is for Allah the Exalted or for this person, who is one of the friends, so I refused. She has pledged some of her jewelry to carry out the slaughter. Is this permissible, or what should I do? Please advise us, may Allah reward you with good.
A1: Slaughter for other than Allah the Exalted is major shirk (associating partners with Allah). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed the one who slaughters for other than Allah. Therefore, it is not permissible for you to perform the aforementioned slaughter to treat your wife’s illness. The prescribed treatment is through permissible medicines, the Shari'ah ruqyah (healing by Qur'anic recitation), reciting the Qur'an, and prescribed supplications. You must advise your wife and call her to abandon slaughter for other than Allah, and to follow what is prescribed in treating her illness. May Allah make healing and guidance easy for her. And success is from Allah. And may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
