Fatwa number ( 20786 )
Q: Some people, when they want to slaughter, head to the West and slaughter in a place where slaughter is performed for other than Allah . Is it permissible for us to eat from their meat?
A : Slaughter is an act of worship for Allah that must be pure for Allah alone, so it is not permissible to direct it to other than Allah, or to perform it in places where people draw near to other than Allah; therefore, Allah has forbidden eating the slaughtered animals that are slaughtered at the idols, even if the name of Allah is mentioned over them, and Allah has forbidden the believers from that; because those idols were stones around the Ka'bah, and the Arabs in their pre-Islamic age of ignorance used to slaughter their animals at them and draw near to other than Allah with them. Accordingly, it is not permissible for you to slaughter in places where slaughter is performed for other than Allah; because of the imitation of them in that, and out of fear of being influenced by their beliefs. The slaughtered animals that are slaughtered in that
place are forbidden, and it is not permissible to eat from them. It is obligatory for you to slaughter the animal in a place where no one draws near to other than Allah, and where there is no harm, and the slaughter must be pure for the face of Allah, drawing near to Him alone with it, and you must mention the name of Allah when slaughtering it. It is recommended that the one slaughtering faces the qiblah, and that he directs the animal to the qiblah as well; because it is the most noble of directions, and because facing the qiblah is recommended in acts of devotion, except where evidence indicates otherwise. The recommendation becomes more emphasized if the animal is a hady or an udhiyah. It was narrated from A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her): that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Slaughter [your animals] and thereby please yourselves, for there is no Muslim who directs his sacrificial animal to the qiblah but that its blood, its milk, and its wool will be good deeds presented in his scale on the Day of Resurrectionضحوا وطيبوا بها أنفسكم، فإنه ليس من مسلم يوجه ضحيته إلى القبلة إلا كان دمها وفرثها وصوفها حسنات محضرات في ميزانه يوم القيامة
Musannaf Abd al-Razzaq 12:53
. And he used to say:
Spend a little and you will be rewarded a lotأنفقوا قليلا تؤجروا كثيرا
Musannaf Abd al-Razzaq 12:54
The hadith was narrated by 'Abd al-Razzaq in (his Musannaf, vol. 4, p. 388), and al-Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah and al-Bayhaqi narrated something similar. Although the hadith masters have spoken of its weakness in its chain, it is acted upon in the virtues of deeds, and it supports what has been mentioned. Therefore, Ibn 'Umar and Ibn Sirin disliked eating from a slaughtered animal that was directed to other than the qiblah. If one limited himself to mentioning the name of Allah and directed the animal to other than the qiblah, he left the best option but it sufficed him. This is the view of al-Qasim ibn Muhammad and al-Nakha'i and al-Thawri and Ibn al-Mundhir and others.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
