Ruling on Reciting al-Fatihah in the Morning Assembly

Machine translationRead the Arabic original

Fatwa No. ( 8777 ):

Q: We inform Your Eminence that we receive some inquiries from some schools regarding the ruling on all female students in girls' schools reciting Surat al-Fatihah aloud in the morning assembly. Given the importance of knowing the Shari'ah ruling on this matter, we ask Your Eminence to kindly provide us with the ruling so that we can inform the schools.
A: It is not permissible to adopt the aforementioned practice of students, male or female, reciting Surat al-Fatihah as a custom in the morning assembly in schools; rather, it is an invented religious innovation. It is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
'A'isha reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: He who innovates things in our affairs for which there is no valid (reason) (commits sin) and these are to be rejected.من أحدث في أمرنا هذا ما ليس منه فهو رد
Sahih Muslim 1718a
narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim . There is no harm in varying what is presented during the assembly; sometimes verses are recited, sometimes al-Fatihah, sometimes authentic hadiths, sometimes rulings and the like that contain no religious prohibition, and sometimes Islamic songs. And success is from Allah. May Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
