Ruling on distributing food and drinks upon completing the recitation of the Qur'an

Fatwa number ( 2740 ):
Q: O scholars, what is the ruling of the Shari'ah regarding the following issue: (1) Did the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) distribute any food, drinks, or sweets after completing the recitation of the Noble Qur'an in the night prayer of Ramadan? Or did any of his Companions (may Allah be pleased with them), the Tabi'un, the generation after the Tabi'un, or the righteous Salaf do so? If this matter is established in the centuries known for their goodness, please inform us, citing the book, page, volume, and publisher. If it is not established, please inform us with evidence whether this action is permissible in the Shari'ah if done as a commitment, with the doer believing that these foods, drinks, and sweets are a means of seeking blessing (tabarruk)?
A: It is not established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), nor from any of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them), nor from the Tabi'un, nor from the imams of the Salaf, as far as we know, that they used to distribute food, drinks, and sweets and commit to doing so when they completed the recitation of the Qur'an in the night prayer of Ramadan. Rather, it is a religious innovation (bid'ah) newly introduced into the religion, because it follows an act of worship for which it was done and timed to its time. Every innovation in the religion is misguidance; for it contains an accusation of the Shari'ah of not being
complete. And Allah the Exalted said:
This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islam as religion.
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave us a sermon that made our hearts tremble and our eyes shed tears. So we said: "O Messenger of Allah, it is as if this is a farewell sermon, so give us advice." He said: "I advise you to fear Allah, and to listen and obey, even if a slave is appointed over you. Indeed, whoever among you lives will see much disagreement. So hold fast to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the rightly guided caliphs after me. Hold fast to it and grip it with your teeth. And beware of newly invented matters, for every newly invented matter is an innovation, and every innovation is misguidance."
This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islam as religion.
