Hearing the Dead Call the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him)

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The third question of Fatwa No. ( 1727 ):
Q3: Do the dead hear? (meaning: the Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him).

A3: Hearing sounds is a characteristic of the living. When a person dies, his hearing departs, so he does not perceive the sounds of those in this world nor hear their speech. Allah the Exalted said:
but you cannot make hear those in the graves.وَمَا أَنْتَ بِمُسْمِعٍ مَنْ فِي الْقُبُورِ
[Fatir 35:22]
Thus, the Exalted affirmed to His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) that those whom he called to Islam do not hear, by likening them to the dead. The principle regarding the thing being likened to (the base of the simile) is that it is stronger than the thing likened to it in possessing the point of comparison. Therefore, the dead are more deeply characterized by not hearing and more deserving of not responding than the stubborn ones who deafened their ears to the call of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) and were blind to it, and they said, "Our hearts are wrapped." In this regard, the Exalted said:
That is Allah, your Lord; to Him belongs sovereignty. And those whom you invoke other than Him do not possess [as much as] the membrane of a date seed. (14) If you invoke them, they do not hear your supplication; and if they heard, they would not respond to you. And on the Day of Resurrection they will deny your association. And none can inform you like [one] Acquainted [with all matters].
[Fatir 35:13-14]
As for the hearing of the killed disbelievers who were buried in the Qalib on the day of Badr of the call of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to them and his saying to them:
"Have you found what your Lord promised you to be true? Indeed, we have found what our Lord promised us to be true."هل وجدتم ما وعد ربكم حقًّا، فإنا وجدنا ما وعدنا ربنا حقًّا
and his saying to his companions:
You do not hear what I say any better than they doما أنتم بأسمع لما أقول منهم
Sunan an-Nasa'i 2075Sahih (Darussalam)
when they were surprised by his calling to the people of the Qalib , that is from his specific attributes by which Allah distinguished him, so it was excepted from the general principle by evidence. Likewise, the hearing of the dead of the striking of the sandals of those accompanying his funeral is excepted from this
principle. Likewise, his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
If any one of you greets me, Allah returns my soul to me and I respond to the greeting.ما من أحد يسلم علي إلاَّ رد الله علي روحي حتى أرد عليه السلام
Sunan Abi Dawud 2041Hasan (Al-Albani)
is excepted from this principle. And success is from Allah. And may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his companions.
