The first and second questions of Fatwa No. ( 5845 ):
Q1: I am a Muslim by father and mother, and also by heart, faith, and action. I do everything that Islam has commanded, except for what I do not know. I have a friend among the Muslim brothers, and I have a friend in the Naqshbandi path who is affiliated with Shaykh Ibn 'Alaw al-Mustaghni , who controls several zawiyas (mosques of asceticism) and others in the Hamdawi path, who lick fire and perform sorcery. And also the 'Asawi path. Their work is playing with snakes, performing sorcery, and selling amulets that protect them—meaning, they protect people from snakes—and prevent them from being struck by jinn, and so on. I have a brother who is a fighter in the National Liberation Front party, and another in the Islamic Scouts. Which of these paths is the correct one? And will those who practice these paths and follow them be rewarded or held accountable? What is the evidence? I do not know from among these people who is correct and who is wrong. Guide me to the truth? This is due to my lack of proficiency in Islamic jurisprudence, or guide me to what is good among these superstitions, if they are superstitions.

A1: The correct path is: the path of Islam that came through the Book of Allah the Exalted and was explained by His Messenger Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), including faith in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, the Last Day, and faith in the divine decree and destiny of Allah, its good and evil, its sweet and bitter aspects; testifying to the oneness of Allah and to the messengership of His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) to all mankind; establishing the prayer; giving zakah; fasting in Ramadan; performing Hajj to the House of Allah the Sacred; enjoining good and forbidding evil; striving to support the religion of Islam; being patient against harm in the way of protecting and spreading it; sticking to the Muslim community; loving for the sake of Allah; hating for the sake of Allah; and the like of what came in the Qur'an and in the Sunnah of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). Whoever is upon this path, his path is the correct one. And whoever agrees with some of it and disagrees with other parts of it, he has goodness and correctness to the extent that he agreed with it, and error and evil to the extent that he disagreed with it. As for sorcery, writing amulets, hanging amulets, and fortune-telling, all of it is not permissible.
