The ruling on praying behind a fortune-teller or sorcerer who claims knowledge of the unseen

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 2948 ):
Q: Is it permissible for a fortune-teller or sorcerer to lead people in prayer? What is the ruling on praying behind a fortune-teller or sorcerer who claims knowledge of the unseen in the future? There is a group of scholars in South Africa who are sorcerers; they deceive millions of weak Muslims and consume their wealth through sorcery, fortune-telling, writing talismans, and utilizing jinn. Here, some Indians and Pakistanis have hair that they claim is the hair of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and they deceive people with it.
Who visits them in the neighborhood of Lans , where they display that hair, pays 30 pounds or 100 pounds. Is that permissible? We disapprove of them, so please issue a ruling for us.

A: Whoever claims knowledge of the unseen among fortune-tellers and sorcerers, whether by looking at the stars, or in a book, or by writing in the sand, or by utilizing a jinn, or the like of that which is not among the ordinary causes, is a disbeliever by the saying of Allah the Exalted:
Say, "None in the heavens and earth knows the unseen except Allahقُلْ لاَ يَعْلَمُ مَنْ فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالأَرْضِ الْغَيْبَ إِلا اللَّهُ
[An-Naml 27:65]
the verse, and His saying:
(26) [He is] Knower of the unseen, and He does not disclose His [knowledge of the] unseen to anyone (27) Except whom He has approved of messengers, and indeed, He sends before each messenger and behind him observersعَالِمُ الْغَيْبِ فَلا يُظْهِرُ عَلَى غَيْبِهِ أَحَدًا (26) إِلا مَنِ ارْتَضَى مِنْ رَسُولٍ فَإِنَّهُ يَسْلُكُ مِنْ بَيْنِ يَدَيْهِ وَمِنْ خَلْفِهِ رَصَدًا
[Al-Jinn 72:26-27]
and His saying:
Indeed, Allah [alone] has knowledge of the Hour and sends down the rain and knows what is in the wombs. And no soul perceives what it will earn tomorrow, and no soul perceives in what land it will die. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.
[Luqman 31:34]
. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) clarified that by his saying:
He who visits a diviner ('Arraf) and asks him about anything, his prayers extending to forty nights will not be accepted.
Sahih Muslim 2230
narrated by Muslim in his Sahih, and his saying:
or who goes to a fortuneteller and believes what he says, he has disbelieved in that which was revealed to Muhammad.
Sunan Ibn Majah 639Hasan (Darussalam)
(peace and blessings be upon him), narrated by Abu Dawud, and his saying:
Whoever goes to a diviner or a fortune-teller and believes what he says has disbelieved in what was revealed to Muhammad
Sunan al-Bayhaqi 15:740
(peace and blessings be upon him), narrated by the four and al-Hakim, who said: authentic according to their conditions, and his saying:
It is not one of us who takes an omen or has an omen taken for him, or practices fortune-telling or has fortune-telling done for him, or practices sorcery or has sorcery done for him. And whoever goes to a sorcerer and believes in what he says has disbelieved in what was revealed to Muhammad.
(peace and blessings be upon him), narrated by al-Bazzar with a good chain. Accordingly, it is not permissible for one who knows the condition of these people to pray behind them, and his prayer behind them is invalid. And success is from Allah. And may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his companions.
