Combining the hadiths of “Whoever goes to a diviner and asks him” and “Whoever goes to a fortune-teller and believes him”

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 10648 ):
Q: How do we reconcile the following two hadiths: 1 -
He who goes to one who claims to tell about matters of the Unseen and believes in him, his Salat (prayers) will not be accepted for forty days.من أتى عرافًا فسأله عن شيء فصدقه لم تقبل له صلاة أربعين يومًا
Riyad as-Salihin 1669
, narrated by Muslim in his Sahih. 2 -
or who goes to a fortuneteller and believes what he says, he has disbelieved in that which was revealed to Muhammad.من أتى كاهنًا فصدقه بما يقول فقد كفر بما أنزل على محمد
Sunan Ibn Majah 639Hasan (Darussalam)
, narrated by Abu Dawud .

The first hadith does not indicate disbelief, whereas the other indicates disbelief.

A: There is no contradiction between the two hadiths. The hadith:
or who goes to a fortuneteller and believes what he says, he has disbelieved in that which was revealed to Muhammad.من أتى عرافًا أو كاهنًا فصدقه فقد كفر بما أنزل على محمد
Sunan Ibn Majah 639Hasan (Darussalam)
means: whoever asks a fortune-teller while believing in his truth and that he knows the unseen commits disbelief; because he contradicts the Qur'an in the saying of Allah the Exalted:
Say, "None in the heavens and earth knows the unseen except Allahقُلْ لاَ يَعْلَمُ مَنْ فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالأَرْضِ الْغَيْبَ إِلا اللَّهُ
[An-Naml 27:65]
. As for the other hadith:
He who visits a diviner ('Arraf) and asks him about anything, his prayers extending to forty nights will not be accepted.من أتى عرافًا فسأله عن شيء لم تقبل له صلاة أربعين ليلة
Sahih Muslim 2230
narrated by Muslim does not contain (and believed him). By this, it is known that whoever goes to a diviner and asks him, his prayer is not accepted for forty nights; if he believes him, he has committed disbelief. And success is from Allah. And may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
