Fatwa No. ( 7323 ):
Q: I inform Your Eminence that I married an orphan girl who is uneducated, and this was during the Festival of Breaking the Fast in the year 1403 AH. At the beginning of the month of Dhul-Hijjah, she was afflicted with a mental illness characterized by crying and wailing, which sometimes rises to screaming and howling. Her father took her to his home and brought a fortune-teller to treat her. He treated her with foul-smelling incense and ordered that she be confined in a dark room for the entire month of Muharram. They call this treatment: al-Hujbah. This happened without taking
my consent. She recovered and remained in her family's home for the months of Safar and Rabi' al-Awwal, then returned to my home at the beginning of Rabi' al-Thani, and the same illness returned to her. I am now treating her with a specialist psychiatrist who treats her with the Qur'an and the well-known Prophetic supplications, in addition to other treatments. However, her family is not convinced and wants her to be treated by one of the fortune-tellers. My family has forbidden me from reciting the Qur'an over her when the fit occurs; because the fortune-teller told them that I am the cause of the increase in her illness; because I recited over her the two chapters of protection (al-Mu'awwidhatayn) and the Verse of the Throne. What is the position I must take if her father presents her to another fortune-teller? I ask for your help in responding as soon as possible.

A: You did well in treating her by reciting the Qur'an over her and performing ruqyah with the well-known Prophetic supplications. However, it is forbidden for a non-mahram man who performs the ruqyah to be in seclusion with her, and it is forbidden for her to expose any part of her 'awrah before him or for him to place his hand on her. It would be more cautious if you undertook her treatment in this manner, or if one of her mahrams did so. We also see that she should be treated in a hospital or the like by a doctor of mental diseases, as he is a specialist in treating this illness. As for presenting her to fortune-tellers and going to them for treatment, it is prohibited; due to the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
He who visits a diviner ('Arraf) and asks him about anything, his prayers extending to forty nights will not be accepted.من أتى عرافًا فسأله عن شيء لم تقبل له صلاة أربعين ليلة
Sahih Muslim 2230
, narrated by Muslim in his Sahih, and due to his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
or who goes to a fortuneteller and believes what he says, he has disbelieved in that which was revealed to Muhammad.من أتى كاهنًا وصدقه بما يقول فقد كفر بما أنزل على محمد
Sunan Ibn Majah 639Hasan (Darussalam)
(peace and blessings be upon him). May Allah guide everyone to following the truth and adhering to it, and to leaving what contradicts it. And success is from Allah. And may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
